GET ON THE DACA EMAIL LIST

DACA is working to update its Member Email List. Printing and mailing our newsletter, The Villager, is costly, and since the Davidsonville post office can no longer accept bulk mailings, every issue now requires that a volunteer drive the newsletters to the Eastport post office, a facility that does process bulk mail. The necessity of being able to distribute the newsletter via email by a PDF attachment is fast approaching. When that happens, printed newsletters will likely be mailed only to residents who specifically request and pay for a hard copy edition. Additionally, having a comprehensive email list of members will allow DACA to send alerts, when necessary, to inform residents about such events as road closings, crime watches, health advisories, local happenings, etc. DACA will never "spam" its members or share our organization's email list with third parties. Please help us compile this list by including your email address when you renew your membership. Or, better yet, send us an email (to the Contact Us link, below) and provide us with your name, street address and email address so we can add you to the list. Thank you!

THE WELCOME TO DAVIDSONVILLE SIGN

Plans to welcome drivers with a "Welcome to Davidsonville Sign" near Rutland Road and Route 424 are progressing. After receiving proposals from several landscaping companies, the Executive Board realized that the most cost-effective option will be for DACA volunteers to do most of the construction work themselves. So, DACA Treasurer Robert Carobrese of Sunrise Environmental Services will lead a group of volunteers in preparing supports for the sign. Executive Committee member Harlan Ray, a retired mason, will oversee the stone work. The sign itself will be commissioned from a sign manufacturer and will be constructed of long-lasting urethane. In the meantime, DACA is working with the State Highway Administration to acquire the needed permissions and permits. DACA might seek donations toward the cost of the sign once we have an acceptable plan and cost estimate. Please contact Will Biddle, Lara Mulvaney or Gail Enright if you'd like to contribute to the welcome sign fund. (Contact information is on the "About Us" page.)

DACA HAS RAIN BARREL EXPERTISE

Lara Mulvaney, our newest board member, is a Master Watershed Steward and she can help you install a rain barrel or a rain garden. Contact Lara if you need information or help with rain barrels, rain gardens, native plants, invasive species and bay-friendly lawn care. (By the way, Lara uses four rain barrels and a rain garden at her own home.)

ROAD CLOSURE: RUTLAND ROAD and ROUTE 450

May 26, 2010: From the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works: "The Work to repair the failed culvert underneath Rutland Road is expected to begin next week. The repairs require working in an active stream channel that is fed from a very large drainage area requiring a coordinated and responsible strategy for maintaining stream flows, especially during storms. Responsibly maintaining stream flows will prevent: further damage to the failing road bed; further flooding of the road; and washout of sediment into the stream. The County is finalizing plans that meets these objectives and expects to return the road to service by the first week of July. The Department of Public Works apologizes for the inconvenience this road closure has caused residents and motorists. However, in the interest of public safety, it is necessary that we complete repairs to culvert system before Rutland Road is re-opened.

CRIME REPORTS

County residents can now access crime incident information from the Anne Arundel County Police at www.aacounty.org/police. Click on the "Crime Reports" icon. The site is updated daily. Interestingly, the county police report that while on a random patrol through a neighborhood they found 12 unlocked vehicles with garage door openers easily accessible. It's best to keep your cars locked, even at your home.

TREE TRIMMING BY BGE

In order to keep tree branches from snagging utility lines, federal law allows power companies to trim as far as 75 feet into a resident's property. Property owners can request assistance from BGD and/or the Department of Natural Resources to provide replacement greenery that will look nice and not interfere with the overhead lines.
